Pineda de Mar
Pineda de Mar is a coastal village overlooked by the Montpalau castle which was built in the eighteenth century when Pineda de Mar was known as Pobla de Sa Buada. For many years, the town became victim to many pirate attacks, and later suffered from the war against Napoleon which resulted in almost all the town being burnt down. To this day, there are some archeological sites dating back to -3 B.C. when Spain was populated by the Iberians.
The town of Pineda de Mar is located in the north of the Costa de Barcelona - Maresme, between the towns of Calella, Santa Susanna and off the shore of the Miditerranian sea. The town is situated only 55 km from Barcelona and 45 km from Girona.
The town of Pineda de Mar is situated 10 meters above sea level, between mountains and the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
The town covers an area of 1,035 hectares (10.35 km ²) and has 24,300 inhabitants (January 2004). Agricultural areas and forests occupy nearly 70% of the town with the rest being occupied by housing estates and industrial areas. As well as this, a large part of the town near to the sea has been converted into residential areas and hotels. 10% of the town is part of the Natural Park Montnegre Corridor.
